What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?
Technical·6 min read
A plain-English explanation of MCP — the open standard that lets AI assistants connect to tools and data sources.
# What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that allows AI assistants to connect to external tools, databases, and data sources in a standardised way.
## The problem MCP solves
AI assistants are powerful, but they're limited by what they know. Without MCP, connecting an AI to your company's database, your calendar, or a third-party service requires custom development for each integration.
MCP creates a universal "plug" that any AI assistant can use to connect to any compatible tool or data source.
## How it works
Think of MCP like USB for AI. Just as USB allows any device to connect to any computer without custom cables, MCP allows any AI assistant to connect to any MCP-compatible tool.
When an AI assistant has MCP access to a tool, it can:
- Read data from the tool
- Take actions within the tool
- Use the tool's capabilities to complete tasks
## Why it matters
MCP is making AI assistants dramatically more useful. Instead of just answering questions based on training data, AI assistants with MCP can:
- Access your real-time data
- Take actions in your actual tools
- Connect multiple services together
## Is MCP for everyone?
Currently, MCP requires some technical setup. But as the ecosystem matures, more tools will offer MCP connections out of the box, making it accessible to non-technical users.
